Chapter 1
I like how the novel begins with the story of how Okonkwo got his fame in the village. It is helpful how the scene with Okoye gives insight to the African culture. I also liked the history of his father. This helped me understand why Okonkwo is the way he is disgusted by unsuccessful people. So far, I have that Okonkwo is a great wrestler, wealthy farmer, and married to three women. He is expected to do great things for the village.

I also like the way Achebe gives some background information about the characters. It makes it easier to understand where they are coming from. I also like how he incorporates different details about African culture into the story without straying from the main idea.
What about how Okonkwo and his Dad's relationship? How does his Dad's weakness affect Okonkwo? This is an important thread, because it is the motivation for the main character. He's is very scared to be like his Dad. (Lazy & weak)
Try and draw connections between the characters and what might be in their minds whenever possible. This shows evolved and higher thought process learning.
Longer posts help too. ;-)
I'll check back later,
Mr. Farrell
I definetly agree with Sara and You. I like a book when it gives a backtround like Achebe does. It just helps the reader definitly understand the story better, and why some things are that way.
You really like the way that he is writing? I kind of think that the details drag the story out a little. I mean I know that authors have to give background information, but I just thought it was boring. He writes so poetically, I guess that I just don't like that.
I agree with you about his father. He plays a very important role in this book I think. Everything Okonkwo is, is built around what his father wasn't. I also agree about the background. This book has been a pretty easy read so far, and I think it is because of the detail. Everything is laid out so easily to comprehend.
I like how there was a history of his father in the first chapter. If i didn't know the reason why he acts like he does I probably wouldn't have liked the book as much. It would have been more confusing to me.
