Chapter 3

I guess Okonkwo's mom didn't die while he was still because it mentions him having to feed his mother and siblings. I mean that would have to make Okonkwo upset because his still a young man, and he has to take care of his father's family. Okonkwo is trying to start a barn of yams for himself, but he is not able to because he has to use most of his yams to feed his mother, father, and siblings. That could be one reason why Okonkwo does not care for lazy people.

I feel bad for Okonkwo when his yams do not grow as planned. He gets off to a rough start. This could possibly foreshadow his future. I think that eventually even if he does everything right, something is going to go wrong. If he planted the yams at just the right time and did everyting to save them from the heat of the drought, then something similar might happen with his life later, but I'm not sure.

You can tell that the village already respects Okonkwo because Nwakibie, the wealthy man of the village, trusts Okonkwo with his yams. Nwakibie refused to give yams to many young men that asked him, but he said that he would trust Okonkwo completely. He trusts him because he feels that Okonkwo is going to be a successful person. He says he can tell that from looking at him. I think that is extreme, but I guess it could be part of the culture.

Wow, Alaina, overachiever, ha. I definitely agree that something is probably going to go wrong in Okonkwo's life. It, just has to. Everyone does seem to respect him, but I really don't think he has many friends. And I definitely believe that he isn't very close with his family. I think somewhere along the line he is going to realize that his possessions don't satisfy him and by then it will be too late.

I agree with you Alaina, taking care of his father's family could be why he gets upset about lazy people. Not only did he have to establish himself and his yam farm, but he had to provide for his mom and siblings with what little yams were produced. You could also be right about his future too. I never thaught of that. Good observation

That is pretty terrible that he has to supports his fathers family because his father was too lazy. That could really explain his stong temper. It was pretty depressing he could not grow his yams that year. People were really counting on him to grow them.

I kind of feel bad for Okonkwo too when his yams didn't grow, but later in the book I don't like him one bit. You'll understand as you get father into it.

I also feel bad that Okonkwo had trouble growing his yams. I think the main reason that I felt so bad was because of how he had to feed his whole family, even his own lazy dad. Back then I think that, that would weigh heavy on Okonkwo because everyone would always be looking down on him because of his lazy father. And because of that I believe that is why he works so hard, to regain his honor.
